Hannah Maule-ffinch was commissioned by Southwark Council to shoot a series of portraits for a travelling exhibition celebrating the Olympic Games called What’s Luck Got To Do With It.

As its press release says: ‘many athletes and performers have rituals or processes they follow or object they consider to bring them good luck. In many athletic fields it is common and accepted practice and is all part of the confidence boosting needed by some people to help them achieve’.

Sam Barker was lucky enough to meet and work with Olympic Gold medallist and national treasure Jessica Ennis.

The shoot took place in Central London and was realised to help promote The Sun’s campaign for kids to have a fitness session at school every day while showing the golden bottle Powerade (for which Ennis is an ambassador) specially made to celebrate her triumph at London 2012.

‘She was great to work with!’ – Sam said – ‘There was a real buzz around her and you could see that people just naturally warmed to her. She seemed totally comfortable with who she is and the sort of circus that was around her’.
