British scientists have found a way to fight back against disease carrying mosquitos by planting a “kill switch” in the DNA of the Aedes Aegypti mosquito.
By releasing armies of re-engineered non-biting males into the wild, the underwhelmingly named ox513a mosquito will wipe out billions of mosquitos carrying diseases such as yellow fever, dengue fever and the zika virus.
The genetically modified male mosquitos mate with the females and before their offspring can reach adulthood, the kill switch in their genetic code activates and they die, potentially saving ten of thousands of human lives.
